Are you tired of being held back? Not experiencing ALL that God has planned for you? There’s a message that stirred in Jerry’s and my heart for decades, and it is the power of God’s Word to set you free.
Since Jerry went home to heaven, I’ve had to live this message more than ever. Being free from Satan’s oppression is not just a biblical idea for me, it’s been my daily lifeline.
As I was thinking about this topic, one of Jerry’s teachings came to mind, and I want to share that word with you. Let it encourage you as it has encouraged me!
FREE AT LAST
Jesus declared in John 8:31-32, "If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
The freedom Jesus offers hinges on three things: reading the Word, understanding the Word, and applying the Word. Let me share with you from my personal journey how these three practices have produced freedom in my life and how they can do the same in yours.
CONTINUE TO READ THE WORD
When I first came to the Lord, I didn't know where to start in the Bible. I thought maybe I’d begin at page one. But Carolyn told me, "Start in the New Testament." So, I did, and my Bible fell open to John chapter eight.
The very first verses I ever read were John 8:31-32, where Jesus said that the truth will set you free. As I read that passage, one word jumped out at me like it was the only word on the page… continue. It was like the Holy Spirit highlighted that word just for me.
God said to me, "You're a good starter, Jerry, but you don’t continue." And He made it clear, If I wanted to succeed in ministry, marriage, fatherhood, or any part of life, I would have to develop the art of continuing.
So, I made a decision right then and there. I remember lifting my hands and saying, “Lord, from this moment forward, quit is no longer going to be an option in my life.”
Reading the Word daily is where freedom begins. It's not enough to start. You must continue. Too many believers read for a few days, get busy, get distracted, and stop. Then they wonder why they’re still living in bondage.
Jesus didn’t say, "If you try reading the Word." He said, "If you continue in my Word."
So, you've got to make that decision. If you want to live in the kind of freedom that the Bible says you're entitled to, then quit must no longer be an option. Continue in the Word—don’t quit, don’t get distracted, and don’t give up. That’s the first step toward real freedom.
UNDERSTAND THE WORD
When I began reading the Bible in 1969, the more I read, the more truth I discovered. And the more truth I discovered, the more freedom I walked in. I realized I’d been lied to—not intentionally, but through tradition and ignorance.
My parents loved God, but they didn’t know we’d been redeemed from the curse, or that by Jesus’ stripes we were healed. I only learned those truths because I read the Word.
You can only walk in what you understand.
The enemy thrives in confusion. That’s why Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."
There’s a lot of bad doctrine out there that sounds spiritual but is full of bondage. You’ve heard it… “God made me sick to teach me something.” “Maybe He took my baby for a higher purpose.” “Maybe this poverty is His will for my life.” No. A thousand times no! The people saying those things don’t understand God’s word—and they don’t know the truth.
The truth of God’s Word must get from the page to your mind and to your heart. Don’t just skim the Bible, study it. Meditate on it. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what it means and how it applies to your life.
I’ve met too many Christians living way beneath their privileges simply because they don’t understand the Word. But once your eyes are opened, you’ll say what I said back in 1969, “I’ve been lied to all my life.” And then you’ll start walking in truth. And truth—understood truth—will make you free.
APPLY THE WORD
Now this is where the rubber meets the road. Reading and understanding the Word are essential, but they are not the end goal. Freedom comes when you apply the Word.
James 1:22 tells us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. It’s not what you hear that changes you, it’s what you do with what you hear.
